Two decades of published research across academia, multiple industries, law, government, and defense. The same job the whole time: make advanced technology trustworthy enough to actually adopt.

I am an interdisciplinary scientist working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotics, measurement science, standards, and governance. My work spans every stage of research, from writing proposals and code and prototyping hardware, through to publishing, shaping policy, and leading the direction of US federal projects.

I started in Perth, Western Australia, with degrees in electronic engineering and computer science from Curtin, and a PhD in robotics, machine learning, and vision from UNSW. My life-saving work in robotics for emergency response and public safety has been internationally recognized, and helped drive the responsible adoption of intelligent response robots worldwide.

Since 2011 I have worked with NIST, developing over thirty standard test methods for intelligent response robots, methods that guided more than $200M in US government procurements and are now used worldwide. Along the way I helped turn abstract tasks into the test methods and competition procedures behind the DARPA Robotics Challenge, and I contributed the machine-perception expertise behind a patented robotic laser orthopedic surgery system.

Today I lead the development of the NIST AI Risk Management Framework profile for trustworthy AI in critical infrastructure. My mission, stated plainly: advance the safe, responsible, effective, appropriate, ethical, transparent, and defensible adoption of AI and intelligent systems.
